Throughout the years I have come across a lot of information that just often doesn't match up. Care standards and information are outdated, and these little creatures are misunderstood by many. So I decided to make this website as more than just a hamster lover's website, but a hamster website for modern owners who are looking for up to date advice on how to care for and understand their beloved hamsters. Syrian Hamster Care Sheet

Note: I hope to include a pdf version of this in the future. Due to technical difficulties it will have to wait until future time.

English Name: Syrian (Also nicknamed the Teddy Bear, Golden, Black Bear, Common, etc.)

Latin Name: Mesocricetus auratus

Lifespan: 2-3 years

Size: 5-7 inches (13 to 18 cm)

Description: Syrians are the most common species of hamster kept as pets and were the first hamsters to be domesticated and introduced into the pet market. Today’s domestic syrians are believed to be descended from a mother and her litter that were taken from Aleppo, Syria on April 12, 1930. Syrians are available in many colours, patterns and even some coat mutations such as short haired, long haired and hairless.

Temperament: Syrians are generally docile and are often recommended for first time owners. Each hamster is different and while one syrian may be bold and friendly another may be shy and easily frightened. Syrians are also loners by nature; they do not live with other hamsters in the wild and only come together to mate and for the female to raise her litter. If kept together Syrians may fight resulting in severe injury or death of one or both hamsters. Living together is also stressful for these hamsters; stress lowers the immune system making them susceptible to illness. At no point should a syrian be housed with another of its species, a different species of hamster or any other small animal.

Housing: Despite their size hamsters need a lot of room. The generally accepted bare minimum now a day is a cage with the floor space of 360 square inches though it is highly recommended that a larger space is given. Many cages actually made for hamsters are far too small for any syrian hamster and often need to be added on to. It is recommended that you look at the following link in regards to

    There are many different types of cages such as aquariums, bin cages, wire cages, and plastic connectible cages. Any of these types can be great for hamsters as long as they are the right size. Which cage you prefer depends entirely on you. A cage set-up consisting of dozens of Habitrail cages and tubes may be fine for one person, but a chore for someone else who may enjoy a bin cage better.

Substrate and Bedding: Substrate is the stuff that you put on the floor of your cage in order to give your hamster something to walk on, burrow in, hide food in and to soak up any urine. There are many different options to choose from, though not all substrates are safe for hamsters. Wood shavings made from softwood trees such as pine, cedar, and spruce (UK pine) contain toxic aromatic oils called phenols that harm a hamster’s respiratory system and may also cause cancer. Softwood shavings can be kiln dried which removes some of the phenols but not all of them, thus not making kiln dried shavings completely safe. Hardwood shavings such as aspen on the other hand do not contain phenols and so are safe to use. Any scented substrates are also dangerous to hamsters, irritating their sensitive respiratory system, even ‘natural’ scents such as rose or mint. Some other safe options besides aspen shavings are paper-based beddings. Some brands to look out for are Care Fresh, Boxo Bedding, Critter Care, and Yesterdays News Cat Litter. Substrate should be several inches deep, six or so inches is ok, though Syrian hamsters really do benefit having more to burrow in.
    Bedding is what is used in the hamster’s nest. Whatever substrate you are using is fine for bedding but you can also add other materials to make their nest more comfortable. Again not all available bedding is safe. Hamster ‘fluff’ bedding should be avoided, if ingested then it can cause internal blockages and hamsters can get tangled in it causing a limb to lose circulation. Cloth, fleece or other similar materials should also be avoided in case the hamster ingests them unless you are certain that your hamster will not chew any of this. Toilet paper or kleenex makes a great choice for bedding as it’s cheap, comfortable, safe and easy to get.

Supplies: Hamsters need some basic supplies for their home too:
Wheels-- Hamsters need wheels to be able to burn off excess energy. Syrian hamsters can run up to eight or so miles a night as they forage for food in the wild. It is important that the wheel has a solid surface so that the hamster cannot harm it’s feet. A wheel with runged bars can allow great harm to a hamster if they get their foot caught in between the rungs. The wheel should also be at least 8” in diameter so that the hamster has plenty of room to run. Some hamsters may even require a larger size. If their back is arched at all while they are running or they have to hold their head up higher then usual, then the wheel is too small. 

Chew Toys: Hamsters, as rodents have constantly growing incisor teeth. Hamsters trim them by chewing on things. While pet stores do sell wood chews and similar products many do go ignored, often milk bones (intended for dogs) or raw pasta are well received and work well.
Beds-- Hamsters prefer a shelter of some kind to be able to build their nest in. It helps them to feel secure and to reinforce their nest. You can make these at home or buy some from the pet store, the possibilities are endless when it comes to this. Just ensure that it’s big enough for your hamster.
Water Bottles-- Water bottles are made especially to hold water for hamsters. They keep the water clean and contained. A good brand to watch out for is Oasis as they are durable and rarely leak. Be sure to clean out the bottle daily to prevent bacteria from growing, the spout can be cleaned with an (unused) smoke pipe brush. Water bowls can be used instead, but they are not usually recommended as they get dirty easily and if a hamster gets wet from it then they can catch a chill. If they must be used then a small dish such as a tea light holder can be used so that hamsters cannot get soaked by it. Just be sure to clean it daily or twice a day if possible and to keep it elevated so that substrate cannot get into it.
Food dishes-- Food dishes are as simple as a small dish used to hold food. You don’t need one for the staple food if you would rather free feed (sprinkling the food around the cage) however it is easier to monitor if the hamster is still taking its food if you use a dish. There should be a dish used for fresh foods though.
Toys-- Toys are important in a hamsters home as they provide great physical and mental exercise. From tubes, to see-saws, to digging pits, to wherever your imagination can take you. Hamsters are inquisitive creatures and will enjoy exploring all sorts of things. You can make the toys yourself or go check a pet store to see what they have.
Toilets-- Toilets aren’t necessary as part of a hamsters cage but they can help keep things a little cleaner. Syrians will often pick a corner to urinate in, some will also use this corner for feces as well. By putting a toilet in you can encourage your hamster to go in one spot which can then be cleaned out daily. You don’t need a toilet, most hamsters will pick a spot on their own as they get a little older.
Sand Baths-- Sand baths aren’t necessary for syrian hamsters but many Syrian hamsters enjoy being able to dig in the sand. Some may come to use it as a toilet though. Good sand to use includes Chinchilla sand (not dust) though is argued to be dangerous due to the silica content. Those that don’t use Chinchilla sand for this reason will often used Aragonite sand (Calcium carbonate), which is argued by others to be dangerous due to the calcium content in it. Which you use is up to you, further reading should be done so that you have thorough understanding of both sides can make an educated decision.

Cleaning Maintenance: When it comes to hamsters cleaning is not a big chore so long as you keep on top of it. Daily cleaning would include the removal of any left over fresh foods from the previous day, cleaning out of the ‘toilet’ corner and washing of the water bottle or bowl.
How often the cage is cleaned will depend upon the hamster, the substrate and the cage size. An exceptionally large cage will not need to be fully cleaned out as often as a smaller cage for example. Generally a full cage clean out should be done weekly or every other week. The substrate should be dumped out, except for a handful or two; the cage wiped down, the supplies washed and the nesting area cleaned out as well. Once everything is clean and the cage out back together, sprinkle the substrate that was saved prior to cleaning, all around the cage. This will reduce any stress felt by the cleaning of the cage by allowing the scent to remain within the cage, minus the mess. This will also reduce the need felt by the hamster to go over board in marking his home after a cage clean.


Food: The syrian hamster’s diet really isn’t too complicated. Syrian hamsters are mainly grainivorous in the wild though they will also eat greens and insects making them omnivores. Hamsters need a staple diet of either a seed mix or a lab block. Lab blocks are compressed pellets, while seed mixes are made up of various seeds, grains and nuts. Either is fine to use, it depends on your own preference and likely the preference of the individual hamster. In either type of food you are looking for a food with protein of about 17-21% and a fat content of 4-6%. 
Lab blocks are good to use because hamsters are unable to pick through it and eat only their favourite foods, thus they get the complete nutrition provided by the lab block. Not all brands of lab blocks are made equally though, some good brands to look out for include Mazuri and Oxbow. However lab blocks are boring, especially for an animal that is a forager in nature. Seed mixes provide much more variety for a hamster. With seed mixes you need to watch out for mixes that contain to many ‘treats’. Mixes that are overloaded with sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, peanuts and other sweet or fattening food should be avoided. You want a mix that has a good balance of foods. Some good brands are Supreme Pet Foods Hazel Hamsters (called Harry Hamster in some countries) and Carefresh Complete Food for Gerbils & Hamsters (if this brand is used, organic sunflower seeds must be added to the mix; 3-4 daily is a good amount). In order to avoid a hamster from picking out certain foods I would recommend feeding only enough that they can eat in a day or feeding them every other day. They hoard their food so it is very unlikely that they will go hungry. About a tablespoon of food should be enough per day.
    Besides a staple food hamsters will also enjoy many other kinds of foods. Foods such as vegetables fruits, chicken, egg, tofu, etc. are all foods that are enjoyed by hamsters. A complete list can be found on the last page [below]. I would recommend that you try and feed something every day or every other day or so. You shouldn’t just start feeding these foods right away, they should be introduced slowly by starting with some foods a couple times a week and then upping the amounts as you go. Too many fresh foods can upset the stomach, especially if they aren’t used to it so be sure to take things slowly. Also be sure to take out any excess fresh foods after 24 hours so that they don’t rot.
    Pet store bought treats are often quite sweet so they should be kept to a minimum. I wouldn’t feed more than one store bought treat a week, no matter how much your hamster seems to enjoy them or if the package claims that 2-3 a day is just fine.

Obtaining Your Hamster: There are various places from which a hamster can be obtained, they include:

Adoption: Adopting a hamster from a shelter or a rescue has to be the best way of obtaining a hamster and is a worthwhile experience. You never know what poor hamster many need a loving forever home. Most hamsters are given up when children become bored with them or when a hamster is accidentally bought from a pet store, pregnant. They are not there through any fault of their own and deserve a second chance at a forever home.
Quality Breeders and Back Yard Breeders: This is a good choice to get a young and healthy hamster. You may even get a nice choice of colours and the hamster should be well tamed too. Be sure to do your research about the breeder of your choice and to ask lots of questions. Most breeders are not breeding for the betterment of the species but to earn some money or for various other reasons. These breeders are often called ‘back yard breeders’. If the breeder does not seem knowledgeable then it is best to move on and not support their bad practices.
Classifieds: Looking in the classified section of your local newspaper or on online ad websites are a good way to find hamsters in need of homes. Many people attempt t rehome unwanted hamsters themselves rather then bringing their hamster to a shelter, these hamsters need homes too. Keep in mind that some are simply breeders that are advertising.
Other: Getting a hamster from a friend, neighbour or family member that no longer wants their hamster is another option, though tends to be more an opportunity rather than a choice.
Pet Stores: Not all pet stores are bad, though you will never really know what you are getting. Most pet store hamsters have poor genetics due to over breeding, inbreeding and from suppliers not paying attention to genetics. If you can find a store with good conditions then it could be all right. Pet stores should be a last resort. Purchasing from pet stores often support pet mills or back yard breeders.

What to Look For: When selecting your hamster there are a few things to look for to ensure that you're getting a healthy one. A healthy hamster:

  • is inquisitive and alert
  • has bright clear eyes
  • the nose should have no discharge
  • the fur is full and well groomed
  • the limbs aren’t swollen nor is the hamster limping
  • there are no lumps, scabs or red and irritated skin.

If you decide upon an unhealthy looking Syrian hamster, keep in mind that you may have to visit the vet soon after acquiring your hamster. Before selecting your hamster be sure to watch for a bit to be sure that your soon-to-be hamster seems healthy.

Bringing Your Hamster Home: Wherever you are getting your hamster, you are likely going to need to travel to get them. Make sure that you have some sort of travel cage for the way home, holding them in your hands is not a good idea. They will be frightened and they may not trust humans, it's just not a good idea in a vehicle. A cardboard box will work for short trips but anything over 30 minutes and you should bring something that the hamster isn't going to chew through. Most pet stores have a carrying box and some breeders will too, just be sure to find out prior to getting your hamster.    
    Once you have picked out your hamster, ask whoever is helping you to also put in a handful of the substrate and some of the seed mix/lab blocks in the box or cage with your hamster to keep them comfortable and in familiar surroundings. When you get into the car don't talk too loudly, no arguing or loud music. This will only frighten your hamster. If it is a short trip home then don't worry about providing water to your hamster unless it is very hot out, in this case just give them some food high in water content such as cucumber. If possible turn on the A/C if it is hot out or the heat if it is cold. Also if it is hot out, keep the cage out of direct sunlight. If you have a longer trip then be sure to provide some sort of water source such as cucumber. Drive safely but don't dawdle or make any more stops, be sure that picking up the hamster is the last thing you need to do on your excursion.
   When you get your hamster home, the cage should already be set up. Put your hamster in it’s cage right away. Also put in the food and substrate from the travel cage/box into the hamsters new home so that it smells familiar. If the substrate is pine or cedar, don't worry a little bit longer on it to lower stress won't hurt. Now you can enjoy watching your hamster explore it's new home for a few days until socializing begins.

Taming and Socialisation: Hamsters were tamed and domesticated years ago, however they do keep some of their wild instinct and fear of humans. Socializing is about creating a bond of trust between you and your hamster. The key to success is patience. Be sure to wash your hands prior to any handling with non-scented soap so that your hands do not smell like a tasty treat. While some hamsters will warm up quickly, others need some time.

Step 1: When you first get your hamster home, he will be very scared. Do not try to handle your Syrian for 3-4 days. During these few days you can talk to your hamster gently and enjoy watching your hamster play and explore.

Step 2: On the second or third day introduce "scented" tissue. This is toilet paper or kleenex that had your scent on it. Keeping it in your sock, up your sleeve or wherever for a few hours will give the tissue your scent. The hamster will then use it is a nesting material and it will allow your hamster to get used to your scent. Continue with the tissue throughout the taming process, giving some each day

Step 3: After a couple of days of the tissue start trying to hand your hamster some treats. The easiest way to your Syrian’s trust is through their stomach. Your hamster may be scared to have your hand so close, but eventually he or she should be brave or curious enough to take the treat from your fingers. After a couple of days and once he or she is comfortable with this, it's time to move on.

Step 4: Once your hamster is comfortable taking treats from your fingers, then try laying your hand flat on the cage floor with a treat on your hand. Your hamster will eventually get curious and want to check out your hand, though this can take awhile. Your hamster may nibble but this is just them checking you out to see what you are. If your hamster does bite then slowly retreat, tend to the bite and then get right back in there. Your hamster is scared and if you let it know that biting will get rid of you then they will continue to do so. This time try distracting your Syrian by rustling some bedding, making a slight noise or gently blowing in the hams direction if he or she goes to bite again. Continue each day with this step until your Syrian feels more comfortable with it, once your hamster is then move onto the next step.

Step 5: Start with laying your hand on the floor of the cage again and this time try petting your hamster’s back. If he is too uncomfortable with this then try petting them while handing your Syrian a treat. The treat will tempt the hamster to stay while you pet the hamster. Once your hamster is comfortable with this light touch then it is time to continue onto the next step.

Step 6: Lay your hand on the cage floor again and this time when he climbs on, lift your hand a little way off the floor. Continue doing this until you can get your other hand in there and allow him to walk from hand to hand. From this point on you can start to move on to more handling while you continue to slowly build that bond of trust.

    Keep in mind that not all hamsters like to sit in your hands or cuddle. Most of them enjoy being on the go and some will never be happy to play in your hands. Most do enjoy their owners eventually though. It's important to at least get them used to humans in case they require a vet. If they are not used to humans then the vet will have a difficult time checking out the hamster, treatment will be difficult and the whole time the hamster will be stressed.

Grooming: Hamsters are naturally clean animals and will groom themselves much like cats. They do not require bathing, which is actually dangerous and stressful. Their nails may need trimming from time to time however. Besides that long haired Syrian hamsters may need assistance in keeping their long fur ‘tame’. A soft bristled tooth brush to take out any stuck in substrate or to remove any tangles usually works best.

Illness: When hamsters become ill they can go downhill quickly. Throughout your hamster's life you may have to go to a vet so it is best to locate a rodent-experienced vet before you actually need one. Talk to the vet and ask some basic questions in order to gauge their hamster knowledge and ask how much experience they have with hamsters. Not all vets are equal and many don't have a clue about hamsters and only know outdated facts. You may not be able to find a a rodent-experienced vet so you need to find one that is willing to learn how to treat rodents.
It is also best that you start putting money aside right from the start so that if you need a vet later on, you will have to money to give your hamster the care that it deserves. As long as they are kept in a clean cage and are cared for properly they should live in good health.
Here is a list of symptoms that may indicate that your hamster is ill:
  • Sleeps more than usual
  • Loss of appetite
  • No longer grooming him/herself
  • Having difficulty moving around
  • Loss of fur - Runny nose
  • Teary eyes
  • Wet bottom
  • Hamster droppings should be rod-shaped. (Watery droppings indicate too much fresh foods and dry droppings indicate not enough)


    If your hamster is ill a vet must be sought immediately. In order to help keep your hamster calm if you believe they are ill or hurt be sure to keep their body temperature isn't too cool or too hot. Keep the room as dark as possible to reduce stress, don't keep it pitch black when you need to see what you're doing though. Some people also suggest putting a bit of lavender in the cage as the smell can help sooth their nerves and reduce stress.

    If your hamster is put on antibiotics by your veterinarian be sure to give your hamster about a quarter teaspoon of plain, unsweetened yogurt as it contains beneficial bacteria that helps keep their digestive system balanced, as the antibiotics kill the flora in the hamsters gut as a side effect.

The Lone Species

The first species of hamster to hit the pet market is the Syrian hamster (Mesocricetus auratus), since then they have remained the most common and most popular species of hamster. In 1912 when Aharoni caught the ancestors of today’s Syrian hamsters he quickly found upon raising these hamsters that they were solitary creatures. While attempting to breed them in captivity some of the hamsters he caught killed each other while contained in the same cage. Upon more careful housing practices he successfully bred Syrian hamsters in captivity.

It wasn’t Aharoni that first realized that Syrian hamsters were solitary animals however. In 1839 George Waterhouse officially classified these hamsters as their own species. Along with this he gave a description in which he described the Syrian hamster as a solitary species based on his observations.

There may have been others before these two men that knew the Syrian hamsters were solitary, these two men are the ones that history remembers though.
Science has gone forth to look into the sociability or lack thereof in Syrian hamsters as well.

N.C. Pratt and R.D. Lisk’s study (Effects of social stress during early pregnancy on litter size and sex ratio in Mesocricetus auratus) suggest that when pregnant females were kept together, that the subordinate females birthed smaller litters with less male pups in comparison to the females that found themselves in a dominant position of the hamsters. It was found that some of the babies were reabsorbed by the subordinate females likely to deal with the stress of the social situation. Basically living together negatively affected the size of litters of subordinate female hamsters.

Fritzsche P., Riek M., and Gattermann R.’s study (Effects of social stress on behavior and corpus luteum in female golden hamsters) indicates that when females were kept in pairs for five weeks, that they showed physical indications of stress when kept in groups. Basically after comparing certain physical developments after this time between group kept females and singly kept females, those kept in social situations showed signs of having endured stress.

Jasnow A, et al.’s study (Acute and Chronic Defeat Suppresses Humoral Immunity of Male Syrian Hamsters) found that living in social situations caused stress which then suppressed the immune system. “These data suggest that social defeat is an important, ecologically relevant model with which to examine stress-induced immune suppression in rodents” (Jasnow, et al).

In a book intended to help aid researchers in understanding the use of hamster’s in laboratory conditions, it is expressly mentioned that, “Adults generally live one to a burrow and will readily fight one another (Nowak and Paradiso, Anderson and Jones, 1984)”.

In the wild Syrian hamsters only come together to mate. The female then raises her young in her burrow and when the pups are old enough to survive on their own, she ejects them from the burrow for them to begin their own solitary lives. The male has no interest to help raise the young and could even prove a danger to the litter. There is some speculation that a pup may adopt the nest from the mother, though there is nothing conclusive about this at this time. The point is, they do not live together. In captivity Syrian hamsters can live together until about six weeks of age, some as long as eight weeks. At this point the chances of fighting increases and it is important that they are separated. They may seem to enjoy each other’s company at a young age, but it will not be long before those play fights become more serious and injury or death could be the end result for one or both hamsters. Gender has no factor in sociability of this species.

Some people have come out to say that they kept Syrians together with no incident. Even if they do not fight right away, it is still stressful for them to be forced in this unnatural predicament. Stress lowers their immune system and puts them at risk of other health issues. Not to mention they could turn one day while you are at school or or work, or one night while you are sleeping. Unable to help them and only to return or wake up and find one or both hurt or dead. It is simply not worth the risk. Within a day they will settle into solitary life as nature has intended and they will be better off for it. It’s nice to think that your pets are the exception to nature, but really the chances of that being true are too slim to risk it.

Hamsters aren’t like humans or even like some other species of rodents. They do not crave social interaction as we do. While they are often content to interact with humans, hamsters of any species are not welcome in their heart.

What Did You Call Me?

Introduction
So you are walking through a pet store and you come across the hamsters being sold as rare ‘Black Bear’ syrians or the new ‘Blueberry’ dwarf. Or perhaps you found a local breeder who has come up with a new species of hamster that they call the ‘Polar Bear’ hamster. It sounds pretty great except there are only five species of domestic hamsters along with only one hybrid possibility. Yet every pet store seems to have a different name for them and back yard breeders are supposedly coming up with new breeds. Despite what is said, there are still only five species of domestic hamsters. They are often given fake names to make them seem better or more rare in order to sell them faster and at an escalated price.

I noticed that many people go on and on about their ‘teddy bear’ hamsters and their ‘blueberry’ dwarfs without having a clue as to their species specific needs, so I have comprised a list of names that have been seen being used for hamsters in order for people to be able to understand what these false names really mean.

** The five species are Syrian [Mesocricetus auratus], Russian Campbell (RC) Dwarf [Phodopus campbelli], Winter White (WW) Dwarf [Phodopus sungorus], Roborovski (Robo) Dwarf [Phodopus roborovskii] and Chinese [Cricetulus griseus]. WWs and RCs can breed creating a WW/RC hybrid that is often unhealthy, along with a shorter lifespan.

Syrians
Fake names used for Syrian hamsters and what they typically refer to:

Who Cares?

Now why is it so terrible that pet stores and breeders use these fake names? It seems harmless enough, right? Besides the fact that they are re-naming the ‘product’ often just to make more money they are also keeping people in the dark by misinforming customers as to what exactly they are buying. It is vital to understand what you are buying. Syrians cannot be kept together for example and RC dwarfs are prone to diabetes. Getting the species mixed up could be harmful to the hamsters themselves. So what can be done? Talk to store managers, inform people and educate. These small steps are steps toward a more educated group of hamster owners and in turn healthier and happier hamsters.

The Forgotten Relatives

Introduction
All too often when we think of hamsters we think of the five domestic species that we know and love today. Those species include the Chinese hamster, the Syrian hamster, the Russian Campbell dwarf hamster, the Winter White dwarf hamster and the Roborovski dwarf hamster. These hamsters have only been in the pet market for a short amount of time in comparison to many of our other beloved pets such as the dog, cat or even the rat. Something that many people do not consider is that there are other species of hamsters in the wild. Not only that, but there are many other species of hamsters. I have put this together so that we may learn about the forgotten relatives.


Classification System
The easiest way to go through these species of hamsters is to use some sort of organizational system. Science has provided us with a nice classification system for us to use. This system is the taxonomic system. It takes all living beings (even plants and fungi) and it breaks them down level by level in order to organize them. The main structure of this classification system consists of the following:

Kingdom> Phylum> Class> Order> Family> Genus > Species
This classification can be broken down further, but for our needs it does not need to be.

We can put hamsters into this classification system:
Kingdom: Animalia> Phylum: Chordata> Class: Mammalia> Order: Rodentia> Family: Cricetidae> || Now before we go any farther we have to realize that some hamsters fall under different genera (plural for genus) and then under their respective genus, falls the different species.

Let’s look at our five domestic species again. The Chinese Hamster falls under the genus, Cricetulus. Their species name is griseus. So the Chinese Hamster fits into the taxonomic classification system like this:

Kingdom: Animalia> Phylum: Chordata> Class: Mammalia> Order: Rodentia> Family: Cricetidae> Genus: Cricetulus> Species: griseus.

The Syrian hamster falls under the genus, Mesocricetus, and their species name is auratus.

Kingdom: Animalia> Phylum: Chordata> Class: Mammalia> Order: Rodentia> Family: Cricetidae> Genus: Mesocricetus> Species: auratus.

The three Dwarf species fall under the genus, Phodopus. Their species names are roborovskii, campbelli and sungorus (Winter White).

Kingdom: Animalia> Phylum: Chordata> Class: Mammalia> Order: Rodentia> Family: Cricetidae> Genus: Phodopus> Species: roborovskii/campbelli/sungorus.

Using this classification system we can see the genus and species, which give us the Latin or scientific name of the living being in question. The Latin name for human is Homo sapiens; Homo being the genus and sapiens being the species. In order to know which species of hamster it is that we are talking about, we will refer to their Latin name. Remember the genus is always capitalized, while the species is not.

There are seven genera that hamsters fall under in total. However, we will be covering only six of them. The seventh genus, Phodopus, has only three species under it and they are the domestic dwarf hamsters that we know today. Since this is about the ‘forgotten relatives’, they do not need to be included.

Note** Some species have several names that are used to describe the same animal. This is rather confusing, and many have been calling for a closer look in order to rename the species so that each animal has one, and one name only.


Genus: Mesocricetus

This genus consists of four species, including the domesticated Syrian hamster (Mesocricetus auratus). The genus, Mesocricetus, was established in 1898 by Nehring when he realized that there were species of hamsters throughout Asia and Europe that did not fit under the genus, Cricetus.


Mesocricetus brandti

Common Name: Turkish hamster or Brandt’s hamster.

Description: They are solitary animals and are strictly nocturnal, even only eating mostly at night; they hibernate during the cold months. Their appearance is similar to that of an agouti/golden Syrian hamster. They have a dark chest and dark cheek flashes, and are larger than other species under the Mesocricetus genus with an average weight of 150 grams. They only live about two years in laboratory conditions. They breed only two times a year in the wild with an average litter size of thirteen pups. They are known to be highly territorial and aggressive.

Habitat: The M. brandti hamster has a larger and wider geographical distribution than that of their cousin, the Syrian hamster. They can be found throughout Turkey, Armenia, Iran, Georgia and in some other nearby countries. They live in scrub lands, dessert steppes and near farmland. They burrow in the ground from about 0.5 metres to 2 metres deep (19 to 78 inches), and their burrows are composed of tunnels that lead to nesting, storage and toilet sections. According to the IUCN Red List, they are listed as ‘near-threatened’ in the wild, as their habitat is being torn up and farmers are treating them as pests.

Life with Humans: They were popular in lab research in the 1960’s and 1970s, and the colonies in America and Romania are all descended from animals trapped from areas throughout Turkey and Iran. They aren’t used as much today in research, instead being replaced by M. auratus (Syrian hamsters).


Mesocricetus newtoni

Common name: Romanian hamster.

Description: They are solitary animals and are found to be either nocturnal or crepuscular. They have what appears to be a more rat-like face then other Mesocricetus hamsters, a darker coloured back, and dark cheek flashes that reach their shoulders. They weigh about 100 grams and were found to be much harder to breed in captivity than other species. Their diet consists of seeds, vegetation, fruits, nuts and small vertebrates. Their average litter size is ten pups.

Habitat: The M. newtoni can be found in a small region in both Romania and Bulgaria. They live in dry, barren desert or grassy steppes, while others live close to farmland. Its burrow system is apparently complex, with many chambers and tunnels. They are listed as ‘near threatened’ in the wild, according to the IUCN Red List, due to habitat loss from expanding agricultural practices.

Life with Humans: Not much seems to be written about this species since they are apparently harder to breed in captivity and are a protected species. They do appear to be used in lab research to this day.


Mesocricetus raddei

Common Name: Ciscaucasion or Georgian hamster.

Further Name Information: It is believed that there are two or three subspecies within the raddei species, though not all scientists agree. Some names that are used synonymously and are likely supposed to be subspecies names are: Cricetus nehgricans and Mesocricetus nigriculus.

Description: The M. raddei are solitary animals that are crepuscular, but are seen sometimes during the day in the spring and summer. They have a yellowish-brown top coat, a dark belly, and dark cheek and shoulder flashes. They are about 24 cm long (roughly 9 inches). They hibernate 4-6 months throughout the year and breed a couple of times throughout the warmer months with litter sizes of about twelve.

Habitat: These hamsters are found in Russia, though there have been sightings of them in Georgia as well. They live in either mountainous or grassy steppes, or in flat plains. They are also known to make their home near farmland. Their burrows are deep, and those found in mountainous areas tend to have multiple exits while those that live in plains seem to only have one exit. The IUCN Red List describes their population to be of least concern.

Life with Humans: They do not seem to be popular for use in laboratories as not many seem to appear in studies.


Genus: Cricetus

This genus contains only one species of hamster, in fact it is the largest species of hamster in the world.


Cricetus Cricetus

Common Name: European hamster, Common hamster, or Black-bellied hamster.

Description: This hamster is mostly solitary, though the territory of a male can overlap with that of nearby females. They are noted to be quite aggressive towards others of their species, though in lab conditions it was found for lab bred C. cricetus to be able to live in group settings. They have a reddish-brown dorsal (back) coat, white sides and a black belly and chest. They hibernate during the colder months of the year, sealing off their tunnels and storing large amounts of food to last them through until spring. They are reported to breed two to five times during the mating season, having litters averaging a total of nine pups. They have a lifespan of eight years in the wild, and are about 20 to 30 cm (7 to 11 inches) in length.

Habitat: These hamsters have a large habitat range found in countries such as Germany, Poland, Romania, Ukraine, Austria, Russia, Kazakhstan and many other countries throughout Europe. They are found near riverbanks, on grassy steppes and near farmland, though they have also been seen living in meadows and gardens. Their burrows can be as deep as two metres (78 inches), but usually they tend to stay in shallower levels of their burrow in the warmer months. The IUCN Red List has this species listed as least concern, though others considered them to be closer to endangered.

Life with Humans: Though they were first noted in 1679 (named in 1758), they were not used much in laboratories until the early 1970’s due to their aggression with each other. At this time a breeding colony was finally set up after researchers found a way to safely breed them. In lab conditions their hibernation stopped and their lifespan shortened, as it was found that lack of hibernation decreased their lifespan by about three years. They are also widely considered pests to farmers, and while technically a protected species, many countries have failed to work diligently to actually protect the species.


Genus: Tscherskia

This genus only has one species under it - the triton. Not much seems to be known about this species.


Tscherskia triton

Common Name: Greater Long-tailed hamster.

Further Name Information: Not all list this species under its own genus while others use a different species name. Some names that are considered synonymous with Tscherskia triton are Cricetulus nestor, Cricetus triton and Tscherskia albipes.

Description: The T. triton is considered nocturnal, though it is also seen during the day at times. They have a life expectancy of about one year and are said to ‘waste away’ once they have bred. T. triton has a brown dorsal coat and a white underside; it also has a longer tail than most species of hamsters. They feed on seeds, cultivated plants (such as rice, sunflower and corn) and may, at times, also eat leaves. They have a length of about 12 to 16 cm (4 to 6 inches), with a tail of about 7 to 10 cm (about 2 to 3 inches). Their active breeding season is from April to October where they breed anywhere from two to five times and have an average litter size of eight to ten pups.

Habitat: These hamsters are found in Eastern China, North and South Korea as well as in Russia. They are found in xeric (extremely dry) land, near marshes, river banks, canals, farmland and even roads. They are said to have large stores of food in their burrows and they may also hibernate. They are listed as least concern by the IUCN Red List.

Life with Humans: This species has been known as a pest to farmers since ancient times and seems to thrive rather well as such. They do also seem to be used in some laboratory research.


Genus: Cansumys

There is only one species of hamster, under this genus, that has been agreed upon by some researchers who claim that it is, indeed, its own species and should remain under this genus.


Cansumys canus

Common Name: Gansu Hamster

Description: This species is nocturnal, mainly active during the spring and summer. It is a herbivore, feeding on leaves and grasses. Its coat is said to be gray, with black markings on the topside. They have a body length of about 14 cm (5.5 inches), with a tail of about 11 cm (4 inches). Their litter size averages six to eight pups.

Habitat: C. canus is found in central China. Unlike other hamsters, it is an arboreal species (living among trees), living in the forests that are found within the mountainous areas of their habitat. The IUCN Red List lists this species of hamster as least concern.

Life with Humans: It is reported that three specimens were caught during the 20th century. Not much else is known about this species.


Genus: Allocricetulus

This genus has two species that are both found in Asia.


Allocricetulus curtatus

Common Name: Mongolian hamster.

Further Name Information: This species is often mistakenly found under the genus Cricetulus. While some scientists do hold that this species belongs under the genus, Cricetulus, many do not agree. Some scientists also list this species as a subspecies of A. eversmanni.

Description: This species is active both in the early evening and during the night. Their breeding season begins in April, having two to three litters a year with an average litter size of six pups. They keep a store of food to hold them over during the winter months. Their diet consists mainly of seeds, though they sometimes do eat insects as well. They are about 20 to 38 cm (8 to 15 inches) in length and are yellowish gray on their back, while their underside is white.

Habitat: A. curtatus is found in China, Mongolia and in small parts of Russia. They live in sandy areas, grasslands or semi-desert areas, with shallow, simple burrows. They are listed as least concern by the IUCN Red List.

Life with Humans: They have been living near humans for some time with little incident, though one case was reported where one of this species carried the plague. These hamsters are said to be fairly tame and friendly in the wild, showing no fear to humans.


Allocricetulus eversmanni

Common Name: Eversmann’s hamster

Further Name Information: This species is often mistakenly found under the genus Cricetulus. While some scientists do hold that this species belong under the genus, Cricetulus, many do not agree.

Description: This hamster does not hibernate, although daily activity does decrease in the winter months. It feeds on nearby vegetation and seeds, though some reports claim it’s been seen eating lizards, voles, young squirrels and even young bird nestlings. Hamsters found in the northern edge of the habitat range have only two to three litters a year, while those found farther south in the habitat range have three to four litters per year. They are about 13.6 to 16 cm (about 5 to 6 inches) in length. The average litter size is four to six pups.

Habitat: The A. eversmanni is found mostly throughout Kazakhstan, as well as some parts of Russia and China. It lives in dry steppes and semi-desert conditions, while others are found closer to farmland. Further north, some hamsters have been found in forest steppe land. This species is listed as ‘least concern’ by the IUCN Red List.

Life with Humans: This species is seen as a major and damaging pest in some parts of its habitat range.


Genus: Cricetulus

This genus has many species, and is very mixed up depending on who you are asking. They need to be assessed and re-classified. I will do my best to mention all of the animals in this genus as well as to try and comprehend between those that are the same species, but under different names and so on.


Cricetulus alticola

Common Name: Ladek hamster, Tibetan hamster

Description: This species of hamster has a litter size of about five to ten pups, breeding from May to August. C. alticola is about 9 to 10 cm (about 3.5 to 4 inches) in length. Their backs are gray-brown and yellow, while their undersides are white. They are mainly nocturnal, though they have been seen during the day too. They eat various seeds, grains and grasses.

Habitat: This species is found in India, China and Nepal. C. alticola live in habitats from coniferous and birch tree forests, to shrubland, dessert steppe, swamp meadows and highland meadows. It is listed as least concern by the IUCN Red List.

Life with Humans: Insufficient data present in order to complete this.


Cricetulus barabensis

Common Name: Chinese striped hamster

Further Name Information: This species is found to be synonymous with Cricetulus manchuricus, Cricetulus mongolicus and Cricetulus obscurus. This species is also often mixed up with Cricetulus griseus (our domestic Chinese hamster), though for the most part they are agreed to be different species. Some people count them as the same species while still others count one or the other as a subspecies of each other. For this we will treat them as their own species. The information on this species may be slightly flawed, since so many do tend to treat C. griseus and C. barabensis as the same species.

Description: C. barabensis is active in the early night. It’s a social animal, living in groups averaging of around four to five hamsters per burrow. They are about seven to ten cm long (three to four inches) with a slightly longer tail than most hamster species. They eat and store various seeds and legumes and hibernate throughout the winter months, coming out in early spring. The breeding season peaks in March and April, and once again in the fall, breeding two to five times per year with an average litter size of six to seven pups.

Habitat: These hamsters are found in China, Korea, Mongolia as well as Russia. They live in arid places such as desert steppe and semi-desert habitats, and some are also found near farmland. Their burrows tend to be rather simple, about a metre deep, with two to three entrances. They have been found to line their nests with grass. The IUCN Red List has this species listed as least concern.

Life with Humans: Some will argue that this is the same species as the domesticated Chinese Hamster (C. griseus), and thus their life with humans is very close - being used in research and kept as pets. For those that agree that they are separate species, they are used in some research, but are not kept as pets.


Cricetulus kamensis, lama and tibetanus

Common Name: Kam hamster, Lama hamster, Tibetan hamster

Other Name Information: These three species are recognized by a few as “their own species”, but many are regarding them as the same or as subspecies of each other. This article will group them together.

Description: Not a lot is known about this species, which is probably why so much confusion surrounds their name. They are 8.8 to 11.2 cm in length (about three to four inches). The fur on their back is dark gray-brown, with a black dorsal stripe. Their underside is white. They eat grains, grasses, seeds and insects, storing large amounts for the winter months. They have been found to be active both during the day and at night. Their breeding seasons are from May to August with average litter sizes of seven to eight pups.

Habitat: They are found in China near Tibet (or Xizang); living in high mountain grasslands, open steppe and shrubby marshes. The IUCN Red List considers this species to be of least-concern.

Life with Humans: Insufficient data. They may be seen as a pest in China, though.


Cricetulus longicaudatus

Common Name: Long-tailed Hamster

Other Name Information: Some names that are used synonymously with C. longicaudatus include: C. andersoni, C. nigrescens and C. kozhantschikovi.

Description: This species feeds mostly on seeds, though at times also consume insects, they are known for constructing food storages and grass-lined nests. They sometimes occupy burrows that have been abandoned by other animals. C longicaudatus are nocturnal. They have at least two litters of about four to nine young throughout the months of March and April each year. They were discovered in 1867 by Armand David. The coat is dark gray on the back and white the underside. Their tail is longer than most other species at about four to five cm (1.5 to 2 inches) in length and they lack a dorsal stripe. They are 8 to 13 cm (three to five inches) in length from head to body.

Habitat: This species is found in China, Russia and Mongolia. They inhabit various areas such as deserts, shrubland, semi-desert land, mountainous steppe, forests and even alpine meadows. They live in shallow burrows that are often found underneath rocks which are more horizontal rather than deep into the ground. They are listed as least concern by the IUCN Red List.

Life with Humans: They are used in some research labs and most studies to do with advancing knowledge in regards to medicine.


Cricetulus Migratorius

Common Name: Grey Hamster or Armenian Hamster

Description: This species is nocturnal, with a body length of about 8.8 to 11.7 cm (3 to 4 inches). The upper coat is light gray in colour while the underside is white or off-white. It is said to have relatively long ears and large eyes. It typically eats roots, shoots and seeds.

Habitat: They have a wide habitat range found in countries such as Afghanistan, Bulgaria, China, India, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Lebanon, Mongolia, Pakistan, Romania; Russia, Syrian, Turkey, Ukraine and Armenia. C. migratorius are usually found in grasslands, steppes and semi-deserts and now even found near farmland, gardens and even in houses.

Life with Humans: Often regarded as a pest and are used in laboratory research.


Cricetulus sokolovi

Common Name: Sokolov’s hamster

Other Name Information: Formally known as Cricetulus barabensis obscurus, in other words as a sub-species of C. barabensis, but was renamed as its own species in 1988.

Description: C. sokolovi is said to wake up at about mid-day, and is about 7.7 to 11.4 cm (about 3 to 4 inches) in length, their tail being about 1.8 to 3.2 cm (0.7 to 1.2 inches) long. They have a dark stripe running down their back and a gray coat. They begin breeding in May, having two to three litters annually, each averaging two to nine pups.

Habitat: These hamsters are found in Mongolia and China and live in semi-desert habitats - living in burrows built under desert shrubs, mainly in sandy areas.

Life with Humans: Not much information is available right now.


Other Genera to Note

There are two other genera of rodents that are often listed as hamsters; however each genus belongs under a different family. These genera are Mystromys (species under this genus being M. albicaudatus) and Calomyscus (species under this genus being bailwardi along with some subspecies). Since they are not under the Cricetidae family, they are not hamsters.

It is not complete knowledge of these animals in any way, but I believe that it does give us a good basic understanding of what other species are out there.
